Insurance coverage will vary by plan. Some plans will cover nutrition counseling 100% with no co-pay or no-insurance, while other plans may not cover nutrition counseling at all without a specific medical diagnosis.
When calling your insurance company, ask the following questions to help determine your coverage:
Do I have benefits for nutrition counseling, CPT codes 97802 and 97803?
Do I have any nutrition counseling benefits covered under the preventative care portion of my plan? (ICD-10 code Z71.3)?
Is a doctor’s referral required?
Is there a limit on the number of visits allowed?
Do I have a deductible to meet before insurance pays?
Do I have a co-pay or co-insurance?
